Development of a Sustainable Process for Mullet Aquaculture using innovative diets

PiE is located in Plentzia, Bizkaia, Spain.

Objectives:

  • To be acquainted with mullet aquaculture and feeding

  • Write a short report on aquaculture, including mullet aquaculture, feeding, mulet feeding and conventional mullet diets

  • Compare the 3 species of mullet including Mugil cephalus, Chelon labrosus, & Liza aurata on the basis of different environmental parameters

Cell Biology in Environmental Toxicology Group (PiE)

I started with the literature review about Aquaculture and Grey Mullet:

Aquaculture

Farming of aquatic organisms in inland and coastal areas, involving intervention in the rearing process to enhance production

Grey Mullet

Commonly found in Mediterranean countries. Temperate, subtropical and tropical waters. It is cultured worldwide.

Comparison between Chelon labrosus, Mugil cephalus & Liza aurata:

Salinity, Food Preference, Dietary Protein & Granulometry were discussed

Salinity

High levels of salinity can aggravate stressful condition

Food Preferences

Diatoms, Blue green algae, Nematodes, Foraminifera, Macro plant detritus & small invertebrates

Dietary Protein

High levels of protein increases the rate of growth

Some of the Originally Planned Activities:

Cleaning the Tank

The incoming water supply pipe was closed and valve at the bottom of the tank were closed for few second until the running water was clean

Grinding the Feed

T2 Optiline 1P feed was grinded in the grinder, because smaller particles are easily consumed by fish

Giving Feed to Fish

660 mg feed was given in 24 hours at 9:30 and 13:30

Demonstration of the Activities Performed insitu During Last Week:

Future Possibilities:

The research work shall be continued insitu during July and August. This will include continuation of above mentioned tasks including histological analysis at different time intervals.
